Roze Zaterdag is a day in Leeuwarden where Pride is celebrated. It is a yearly event and one that is well visited and well loved. The only problem is, is that it focusses mostly on the teens and adults, and does not include the children. Resulting that the importance of the day can not be shared with all.
This is why the 2021 edition wanted to change things around and include the children into the mix. Creating a special made walking tour for the children, focussing on the importance of the day, the queer history around them, and fun activeties along the way. But, before this could be handed out, a propper map needed to be made.
Client: Kunst Kade | COC Leeuwarden | Friesland kleurt
Task: Create an interactive tour map, for children, to walk on Roze Zaterdag to get to know more about the queer history of Leeuwarden as well as enjoy unique visitable points around Leeuwarden
The "Speuren naar roze sporen in Leeuwarden" walking map
The idea of the map was to create a fun and interactive activety for children on Roze Zaterdag as most activeties are focussed on adults.
The walking tour follows the roze sporen (pink tracks) while walking past famous Leeuwarden landmark. While walking the tour, you gain more knowledge about the queer history of the city, the land marks, as well as be able to join fun interactive activeties along the way.
For the map, it was important that it was easy to follow, the landmarks needed to be clear, as well as it needed to be in a fun and fitting style that children would like.

Icons & Landmarks
For the map, it was important that it was easy to follow, the landmarks needed to be clear, as well as it needed to be in a fun and fitting style that children would like. This is why the decision was made to draw the landmarks in a fun, playful, yet recognizable way.
An important point was that also the children, who live in Leeuwarden, would recognize the buildings on the spot, without needing to see where they were located. This ended up being also being another activety for the children, as parents showed the map to the children and they exactly knew where to go, taking the lead in the walking tour.
The Map
For the map, the decision was made to keep it close to what people know, while trowing in the playfullness of the day self. Lots of colours were used, while keeping the map basic and in a map structure.
It was also important that the cover of the map included the colour pink. Roze Zaterdag means Pink Saturday, while also the days logo being created in pink. However, while the logo is in baby pink, the focus for this map became full rainbow colours, after the Jut & Jul style.
